AI: Levelling the Playing Field

We at the Sudbury Chamber of Commerce have been considering how artificial intelligence – particularly tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini – is likely to affect our members. Our conclusion is straightforward: AI has the potential to level the playing field for smaller businesses.

We have seen something similar before. The Internet allowed firms of any size to establish an online presence that could rival much larger organisations. A well-designed website made a small company appear credible and professional overnight. AI promises a comparable shift – not in marketing, but in managing the day-to-day complexity of running a business.

Regulation provides a clear example. Government rules generally apply regardless of size. Little allowance is made for the fact that many smaller firms cannot afford HR departments, compliance teams or in-house legal advisers. Accountants and solicitors assist with major matters, but a long tail of smaller, practical issues still has to be handled internally – often by the owner.

Regulation is not the only burden. In commercial life there is almost always someone larger on the other side of the table: banks, insurers, utilities or government departments. When a dispute or query arises, the imbalance in resources can be obvious. Larger organisations have specialist teams; smaller firms often do not. This is where AI can help redress that imbalance.

If you have used Google, accessing AI tools such as ChatGPT or Gemini will feel familiar. You log on and type into a box. But the similarity ends there.

With Google, you enter key search terms and scan links. With AI, you provide a “prompt” – a fuller description of your situation and what you need. The quality of the response improves with clarity and context. Instead of typing a few keywords, you explain the issue as you would to a professional adviser.

For example, a member might write:

“I run a small business. A member of staff has asked when the new minimum wage comes into effect and whether it will affect their contracted hours. How should I respond?”

The AI will analyse the issue, outline relevant considerations and help frame a clear reply. It does not replace professional advice where specialist input is required, but it can help owners think through routine questions quickly and coherently.

Used sensibly, AI becomes a readily available assistant – helping smaller firms respond with the structure and confidence once largely confined to much larger organisations.
